Jeannette man accused in hatchet attack now faces rape charges

Jan. 14—A Jeannette man accused of attacking another man with a hatchet last year is now facing rape allegations.

Additional charges were filed last week against Kyle Joseph Bair, 32.

State police said their investigation into rape accusations started in February after a man reported Bair raped him while he was unconscious and recorded video of the assault. The accuser told investigators he was shown the video by Bair.

Through a search warrant, troopers said they recovered a video from Bair’s cellphone that matched the description provided by the accuser. During an interview with police, Bair claimed the encounter was consensual and denied raping the man, according to court papers.

Bair is charged with rape of an unconscious victim, sexual assault and related offenses. He is being held on $100,000 bail at the Westmoreland County Prison. He did not have an attorney listed in the case. A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 22.

Bair is awaiting trial in the July 7 hatchet attack in Hempfield that left the injured man with a serious wound that required emergency surgery. He is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment. His bail in that case is set at $150,000.
