Jury acquits Pensacola man of attempted murder in 2023 Potomac Drive shooting

A Pensacola walked away from the Escambia County courthouse as a free man Friday after a jury found him not guilty of attempted second-degree murder.

Darien Johnson, 21, was found not guilty of attempting to fatally shoot a woman on Potomac Drive April 7, 2023.

Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputies located Johnson as a passenger in a stolen vehicle when the driver fled from a traffic stop in 2023. Johnson was accused of tossing a firearm away while fleeing once the driver of the stolen car stopped the vehicle.

Two other men were previously arrested in connection with the Potomac Drive shooting, Ryan Earl Seals and Ke’Juan Whiting.

Seals was also charged with attempted second-degree murder, but a jury also found him not guilty in a previous trial.

Whiting was not charged with murder, but previously pleaded no contest to possessing a weapon by a delinquent under 24, carrying a concealed firearm and resisting an officer without violence.
