A 37-year-old man was busted when authorities raided his Queens apartment and found a small ghost gun-making operation, police said Friday.
Jonathan Diaz was hit with various weapons charges, police said. His wife, mother and mother-in-law — all of whom were home when the 5 a.m. Wednesday raid happened — were not charged.
Diaz is being held on $150,000 bail. His lawyer had no comment.
Diaz, a mechanic at LaGuardia Airport, does not appear to have sold any ghost guns, police said.
In fact, when authorities showed up at his Queens Village apartment, on Hillside Ave. near 214th St., Diaz said there was nothing nefarious about what he was doing.
“It’s just a hobby, 3D printing” he said, according to the criminal complaint filed in court. “They’re over there in the top drawer.”
Authorities then found the weapons on and inside of a computer desk, police said.
Police said they learned several months ago that Diaz was making purchases that suggested he was manufacturing his own ghost guns.
Four Glock-style guns, one loaded with 9mm bullets, were recovered, as well as eight lower frames — the gun’s structural component — a 3D printer and 14 spools — about 20 pounds — of PLA filament, a plastic used in the production of ghost guns, police said.
The investigation started several months ago and also involved the New York State Division of Homeland Security and the Queens District Attorney’s Office.
Queens DA Melinda Katz said her office is “committed to finding and removing illegal homemade weapons from ourcommunities.”
