Justin Trudeau resigns: How Canadian politicians, and Donald Trump, reacted — ‘out of control’

After weeks of speculation and calls from politicians of all stripes to resign, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that he will step down as leader of the Liberal Party when a replacement is chosen. Trudeau will not lead the Liberals into the next federal election, which must take place before October 2025.

Trudeau’s popularity has dipped dramatically since his election in 2015. In polls conducted just one week ago by Angus Reid, support for the Liberal Party was just 16 per cent, with 46 per cent of respondents saying they think Trudeau should resign.

On Monday, Jan. 6, Trudeau announced from Rideau Cottage that he requested to the Governor General that Parliament be prorogued until March 24. Trudeau intends to stay on as interim leader and prime minister until the Liberal Party of Canada selects a new leader.

Here’s how Canadian politicians, including Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, reacted to Trudeau’s news. Even U.S. President-elect chimed in … Again.
