Kohl’s is slated to close more than two dozen store locations across the United States.
On Jan. 9, the retailer announced a series of “real estate changes” for the new year, including the future of several stores among the more than 1,150 locations nationwide.
The retailer said that 27 stores in “underperforming locations” would close by April 2025.
According to the press release, all store associates were informed of the news and were “offered a competitive severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl’s.”
In addition to store closures, the statement shared that the Kohl’s San Bernardino E-commerce Fulfillment Center (EFC) would close at the end of the current lease term, which is set to end in May 2025.
The San Bernardino location has been in operation since 2010 and is one of 15 EFCs and distribution centers across the country for Kohl’s.
The retailer said that “increased efficiencies with new technology capabilities at newer EFC facilities” and expanded capabilities to allow orders to be fulfilled from store locations has allowed Kohl’s to fulfill orders without the California-based facility.
“We always take these decisions very seriously,” said Kohl’s CEO Tom Kingsbury in statement on Jan. 9. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”
Kohl’s isn’t the only retailer who has announced store closures recently.
In December 2024, employees of Party City were told that the company was closing and at the end of February 2025, all store locations would be shuttered. Macy’s also confirmed on Jan. 9 that the retailer would be closing 66 stores as part of an ongoing reorganization strategy.
