Department store retailer chain Kohl’s announced the closure of 27 of its stores by April 2025, detailing declining sales.
“We always take these decisions very seriously,” CEO Tom Kingsbury said, who will step down as CEO on Jan. 15. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”
Are any of these closures in Florida? Here’s what to know
According to the Wisconsin-based company, these stores were not doing well. Kohl’s said in November 2024 it expects 2024 sales to be down 7% to 8%. The retailer reports its full-year sales in February.
“While Kohl’s continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base, these specific locations were underperforming stores,” the company said.
All employees at the closing stores “have been informed, and offered a competitive severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl’s,” according to a Jan. 9 press release.
An e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, California, is also shuttering in May 2025. The company can now fulfill customer orders from store locations, without the fulfillment center, Kohl’s said.
According to USA Today, Kohl’s plans to close 27 stores by April 2025. That will leave the retailer with more than 1,120 locations.
None of the 27 stores closing are located in Florida.
These closings are in the following states — Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.

According to the official website, there are 52 Kohl’s stores in Florida.
Several companies, ranging from restaurants to big box retail stores, closed locations across the country last year for a variety of reasons, including in Florida.
