LAFAYETTE, Ind. — An Indiana State Police investigation early Saturday of a pickup truck that was shot led to the arrest of a Lafayette couple.
Daniel A. Martinez, 27, and Wendy Gatica Gonzalez Martinez, 27, both of the 2100 block of Ulen Lane in Lafayette, were jailed early Saturday.
Daniel Martinez is suspected of criminal recklessness and possession of cocaine, according to Tippecanoe County Jail records.
Wendy Gatica Gonzalez Martinez is suspected of possession of cocaine, according to jail records.
Both have been released from jail, according to a check of records Monday morning.
A trooper made a traffic stop of a Chevy Silverado pickup truck in the area of McCarty Lane and Tippecanoe County Road 550 East in Lafayette about 1:30 a.m. Saturday. The pickup truck driver told police his vehicle had been shot before the traffic stop.
The trooper noticed a bullet hole in the side of the pickup truck, according to state police.
With the information from the driver of the pickup truck, police found the suspects’ vehicle — a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee, according to state police. The Martinezes were inside the car, and a drug-detecting police dog indicated there might be drugs inside the Jeep, according to Indiana State Police.
Police found what they suspect is cocaine inside the Jeep. They also found car keys to a Chevy Cruze.
The investigation led troopers to the area of Tippecanoe County Road 800 East and Indiana 38, where officers allegedly found a spent shell casing and a Chevy Cruze.
The Journal & Courier called and texted Indiana State Police Sgt. Jeremy Piers asking what role the Chevy Cruze might have had in the shooting. He has not yet responded.
The news release published Sunday indicates the investigation is ongoing.
