Lakeville man indicted in deadly 4-vehicle OUI crash, DA’s office says

BROCKTON — A Lakeville man has been indicted on a murder charge after allegedly causing a fatal four-vehicle crash while driving drunk in 2024, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office said.

The crash, on Jan. 19, 2024, claimed the life of 75-year-old Richard Reed of Lakeville.

David DeLorenzo, 74, was indicted on Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, by a grand jury in Plymouth County Superior Court on the following charges: second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating a motor vehicle, homicide by motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicating substance, four counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

Bail was set at $1,000 cash for 73-year-old David Delorenzo, who is charged with motor vehicle homicide and OUI in connection with a four-vehicle crash Friday in which a 75-year-old Lakeville man was killed.

What happened on day of crash?

On Jan. 19, 2024, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Lakeville Police received 911 calls for a report of a crash in the area of Main Street and Elliot Farm, the DA’s office said.

Officers arrived on scene and found a four-vehicle crash involving a Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota Camry, AudiS4 and a Chevrolet Silverado.

Delorenzo told police he was coming from the Back Nine Pub in Lakeville where he had consumed one double shot and one beer.

The prosecutor at Delorenzo’s arraignment in Wareham District Court last year said it was determined that Delorenzo had been traveling at a high rate of speed and crossed into oncoming traffic before driving onto the breakdown lane and hitting a mailbox.

He then veered back onto the roadway into oncoming traffic where he struck the Camry, setting off the four-vehicle crash, the prosecutor said.

Passenger in Camry was killed

Reed, who was a passenger in the Camry, was pronounced dead at the scene, the DA’s office said. The driver of the Camry was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

DeLorenzo, who was driving the Hyundai, was transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton following the crash, the DA’s office said.

“A blood draw indicated DeLorenzo was well over the legal limit for blood alcohol content and was criminally charged by Lakeville Police upon his release,” the DA’s office said.

The driver of the Audi was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford for medical treatment, while the driver of the Chevrolet was treated at the scene, according to the DA’s office.

DeLorenzo was arraigned on charges related to this incident in Wareham District Court shortly after the crash and was held on $1,000 bail with conditions that he wear a GPS Monitoring bracelet, abide by a curfew, remain alcohol-free with testing three times per day, and not drive while the case is pending.
