LANSING — A Lansing man has been sentenced to more than two years in federal prison on a weapons charge.
Mychal Marcell Borney, 22, a convicted felon, was found in the passenger seat of car after Lansing police responded to shots-fired calls, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release. A loaded gun with an extended magazine was found near where he was seated, and more than a dozen shell casings from the gun were found in the road, officials said.
U.S. District Judge Jane Beckering on Wednesday sentenced Borney to 27 months in prison for being a felon in possession of firearms, followed by 3 years of supervised release, court records indicate.
“Mr. Borney is a habitual lawbreaker who jeopardized the public’s safety,” U.S. Attorney Mark Totten said in a news release.
Borney was charged as part of a gun-violence enforcement program involving local, state, federal and tribal agencies. The “Safe Summer” program is in its second year.
The case involving Borney was investigated by the Lansing Police Department and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Lansing Police Chief Rob Backus said the case highlights the need for teamwork in fighting violent crime.
“The latest sentencing proves that our community feels the same way that we do,” Backus said in the news release. “Illegal guns cannot and will not be tolerated.”
