LANSING — Two Lansing police officers required medical care after being bitten by a dog while trying to arrest a man Thursday on the city’s east side.
One of the officers shot and killed the dog during the 3:15 p.m. incident in the 400 block of South Francis Avenue, Lansing Police Public Information Director Jordan Gulkis said Friday.
Officers went there to look for a larceny suspect who had an outstanding arrest warrant and found him inside a vehicle, Gulkis said. The man refused to get out of the vehicle and resisted officers when they tried to take him into custody, she added.
“While trying to take the accused into custody, a dog inside the vehicle bit the officers’ hands and arms,” Gulkis said in an email. “The dog continued to bite the officers in the legs after the suspect was removed from the car.”
An officer fired a single round at the dog while the suspect was struggling with officers outside the vehicle, she said. The two officers who were bitten were treated and released at a hospital.
Ingham County Animal Control was notified of the incident, Gulkis said.
“This was an unfortunate situation which resulted from Lansing officers placing a suspect into custody who was resisting officers both inside the vehicle and outside,” the spokeswoman said.
No other details, including the suspect’s name and age, were released.
