Leon County Sheriff’s Office expands body cameras to booking process at county jail

Incoming inmates to the Leon County Detention Facility will now be on camera during booking and medical processes: The Leon County Sheriff’s Office is expanding its body-worn camera program to “enhance transparency and accountability.”

“This expansion of our body-worn camera program is an important step in maintaining open communication with our community,” Sheriff Walt McNeil said in a press release. “We believe that transparency is essential in fostering a relationship of mutual respect and understanding between law enforcement, detainees, staff and the public.”

LCSO received grant funding from the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance to equip certain detention deputies with body-worn cameras. Since 2023, the law enforcement agency has pulled in over $3.1 million in grants to support “efficient services to the community.”
