LIVE UPDATES: Snowstorm headed to Tennessee as weather service issues warning

Close to a year after a winter storm walloped Knoxville in January 2024, another major storm is arriving today and bringing a forecast 4-6 inches of snow.

Snow is expected to begin mid-morning for East Tennessee cities such as Knoxville, Gatlinburg and Oneida, and in early afternoon for those further north, closer to the Virginia state line, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow is forecast to continue falling Friday night and into Saturday morning.

This blog will be updated throughout the day and night. Here’s the latest:

How to check road conditions in Knoxville

Once the snow gets started, drivers can check local road conditions by using TDOT’s TNSmartWay traffic cameras around Knoxville.

Major routes through the area are visible from 125 cameras, and can offer a sense of what travel will be like, although the website does not show neighborhood roads or side streets.

Emergency warming centers open around the clock

As snow falls around Knoxville and temperatures drop, emergency warming shelters have expanded their hours of operation through Jan. 12 for those looking for a warm place to stay this weekend.

The shelters at the Salvation Army homeless shelter overflow site, Magnolia Avenue United Methodist Church, Vestal United Methodist Church and Fountain City United Methodist Church will be open continuously until noon Jan. 12, while the Cokesbury Church warming center will be open continuously until 11 a.m. Jan. 11.
