LMPD identifies officers involved in shooting of Orange County suspect

Louisville Metro Police officials released the names of four officers Tuesday who were involved in the fatal shooting of a southern Indiana man who was wanted in connection with the shooting of an Orange County sheriff’s deputy.

The officers, all of whom are members of LMPD’s Criminal Interdiction Unit, are Detectives Benjamin Derby, Jan Dykes, Robert Ross and Joshua Trumbo.

According to the officers’ disciplinary histories released by LMPD, Ross and Trumbo have each faced short suspensions for their conduct during separate incidents in 2018.

Ross was suspended for three days after he pursued a vehicle that didn’t meet criteria for instigating a chase, while also failing to properly activate his emergency equipment and notify his supervisor of the pursuit, according to a letter of suspension.

Trumbo faced a two-day suspension after an investigation found he failed to turn on his bodycam and used unreasonable force during a run, according to a letter of suspension.

In 2024, former LMPD Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel identified Derby as the officer who shot 17-year-old Brandon Marroquin on May 22. Marroquin later died from his injuries.

Leading up to the shooting, police were investigating in Wilder Park neighborhood when they encountered the teen, who was suspected of being involved in a homicide that occurred the week prior, The Courier Journal reported. Marroquin revealed a gun when he was approached by officers and attempted to run away, officials said.

Officers tackled and tried to disarm the teenager while telling him to drop the weapon. He allegedly fired his gun before Derby fire one shot, striking him. Derby’s record shows no discipline for his involvement in the shooting.

Indiana State Police searched for Austin Schepers at a New Albany residence Friday, a day before officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department found and shot him.

What happened in the Orange County deputy shooting?

The shooting of 33-year-old Austin Schepers, who Indiana State Police had been searching for since Friday morning when he allegedly shot Deputy Zach Andry, occurred Saturday night while LMPD officers were looking for him at a Jacobs neighborhood home.

LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said LMPD officers and the U.S. Marshals Service received information that led them to a home in the 3700 block of Wheeler Avenue at around 7:30 p.m.

When officers found Schepers in the back yard of the home, he began shooting at officers. The responding officers returned fire, killing Schepers, Humphrey said.

Bodycam footage of the shooting has not yet been released, but Humphrey said it will be within 10 days.
