The Longmont City Council plans to name a new member to an expected open Ward 2 council seat by Jan. 30, as required by city charter rules, members said at a meeting on Tuesday.
The current person in the seat – Councilmember Marcia Martin – has said she will resign on Dec. 31. She represents south and southwest regions of the city. Since May, Martin has spent time in New York tending to a family member, and she has participated in most council meetings remotely over the last several months.
The City Council plans to start accepting applications for the vacancy on Dec. 16. On Jan. 8, the application period will close, and on Jan. 21 the council is set to hold interviews in a public forum before naming someone to the seat. The new person named to the seat must live in Ward 2, and the plan is to swear in the new appointee on Jan. 28.
Because of the way the city charter is written, city officials will not hold a special election to fill the Ward 2 seat. Martin’s term was scheduled to end on Dec. 2, 2025, before she announced she would resign.
