Mackinac Bridge steel grates are for sale. Here’s how you can get one

Always wanted a chance to own a piece of Michigan history?

The Mackinac Bridge Authority, which oversees the Mackinac Bridge, is auctioning off sections of original steel grating. The auctions all end Jan. 21 on GovDeals.com.

Grating sections are are approximately 5½ feet by 38 feet by 5 inches, with each piece weighing about 2 tons. According to the listing, buyers can request that pieces be cut in two.

“Condition is used with corrosion and section loss appropriate to steel that is 60 years old,” the listings note.

All of the sections for sale have multiple bids in place.

The grating is coated with lead-based paint, and buyers will have to sign a “Hold Harmless agreement” related to the paint and the structural condition of the grating. The agreement absolves both parties from liability for any injuries or damage.

The seller will load the grating for transport, but won’t secure the load.

All auction proceeds will go to the maintenance of the Mackinac Bridge.

Bids as of Friday afternoon on govdeals.com range from $500 to $1,225 for eight separate grating sections.
