Major twist after MP’s sex assault claims

Police have closed their investigation into the alleged sexual assault of former Labor MP Brittany Lauga after she claimed she was drugged and assaulted at a pub – confirming no charges have been laid.

Ms Lauga, the former assistant minister for health under the Steven Miles-led State Government, first reported the incident to Queensland Police in April last year.

She alleged she had been drugged and sexually assaulted during a night out in Yeppoon.

In a statement at the time, Ms Lauga said she also checked herself into the hospital and underwent tests which she said confirmed the presence of drugs she did not take.

That same month, Queensland Police confirmed they were investigating the sexual assault complaint.

In an updated statement this week, a police spokesman confirmed the matter had been closed after nine months.

“Police have now concluded their investigations into this matter,” the spokesman told NewsWire.

“The matter has been finalised and no one has been charged.”

NewsWire has contacted Ms Lauga for further comment.

Ms Lauga served as the MP for the electoral district of Keppel, along the central Queensland coast, between 2015 and 2024.

She lost her seat during last year’s state election to the LNP’s Nigel Hutton.

At the time she initially reported the incident to police, Ms Lauga said she learned video of the alleged incident – allegedly captured by bystanders across the street – was circulating on Snapchat.

Ms Lauga at the time told news.com.au she felt compelled to explain to her electorate what had allegedly happened, and why she was taking mental health leave. on and why she has taken mental health leave.

In a statement after speaking with the outlet, she said: “Tests at the hospital confirmed the presence of drugs in my body which I did not take. This substance impacted me significantly.”

“This could have happened to anyone and tragically, it does happen to many of us,” she continued.

“I have had multiple women contact me who have experienced the same thing in our town.

“It’s not OK. We should be able to enjoy socialising in our town without the risk of being drugged or assaulted.”

“My sole focus is on Brittany and her wellbeing. I’ve told Brittany that we’re here to support her, whatever she needs,’’ he said at the time.

“This matter is currently subject to a police investigation.

“Out of respect of her privacy, and in the interests of allowing the police to complete their investigation, it is not appropriate for me to comment any further.”
