Major winter storm set to end 1,000+ day snowless streak

A significant winter storm blanketing the United States to end the week will lead to extensive flight cancellations and travel delays as a coating of snow falls from Texas to Virginia.

This will be the most snow many of the affected communities have seen in years. A few cities are on the cusp of breaking a historic snow-free streak that’s stretched for more than 1,000 days.

Tens of millions of people were under winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories as a sprawling system began traversing the southeastern United States.

Texans spent the day indoors Thursday as the developing low-pressure system began pelting the state with snow, freezing rain, and ice pellets.

Dallas was in line for 5-10 cm of snow and ice pellets. This would be the most winter weather they’ve seen in the city since Feb. 2021.

A bigger thump of snow was on the way for nearby Little Rock, Ark., which could see 15 cm of snow from its biggest winter storm in nearly four years.

The swath of snow and ice will blanket northern portions of Mississippi and Alabama, which often go years between significant bouts of winter weather. It’s been nearly three years since the northern Alabama community of Huntsville has seen more than 5 cm of snowfall.

Wintry weather is also on the way for eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina, areas still reeling from the historic flooding unleashed by Hurricane Helene back in September.

Southern Winter Storm Stats January 2025

It’s been 1,076 days since Charlotte, N.C., has seen any measurable snowfall. This is the longest snow-free streak on record in the city, which is home to one of the U.S.’s largest airline hubs. Weather records in Charlotte stretch back to 1939.

North Carolina’s capital of Raleigh is in a similar boat, having seen no measurable snow since Jan 29, 2022. This is the city’s second-longest snowless streak.

A light dusting of snow is possible Friday night around the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The nation’s capital continues to clean up from the disruptive snowstorm that blew through the region with 20-30 cm of snow earlier this week.
