Man accused of stealing firearm while committing multiple car burglaries in South Windsor

A man arrested last week is accused of burglarizing multiple vehicles in South Windsor earlier this year, allegedly stealing a firearm during one of the thefts.

Yavier A. Ruiz-Velez, 24, of East Hartford was arrested last Thursday and charged with four counts of tampering with a motor vehicle, two counts of payment card theft and a single count each of stealing a firearm, third-degree burglary and criminal attempt to commit third-degree burglary, according to the South Windsor Police Department.

Police said they had three warrants out for Ruiz-Velez’s arrest in connection with several car burglaries in April on Amato Drive. Investigators tied him to the crimes using surveillance footage and cell phone data, according to police.

Police said Ruiz-Velez stole a firearm from one of the vehicles and credit cards from others which were then used at a Walmart store.

Ruiz-Velez was arraigned the same day of his arrest in Manchester Superior Court. Police said he was already being held in custody in connection with charges in other towns.
