Man arrested in Texas after allegedly sharing child rape videos

Jan. 14—A man is accused of uploading videos of men raping children and sharing them on social media for over a year.

U.S. Marshals arrested Daniel Stumbo, 44, on Jan. 7 in Gonzales, Texas. Authorities learned that, as the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office investigated the allegations against Stumbo, he moved from Rio Rancho to Texas.

At the time of the alleged uploads, Stumbo was living in a Rio Rancho RV Park and working at a solar farm on the outskirts of Albuquerque, authorities say.

Stumbo has been charged with 14 counts of distribution of visual medium of sexual exploitation of children and possession of visual medium of exploitation of children under 13.

Stumbo’s attorney could not be reached for comment.

On April 4, the FBI in Albuquerque learned video downloads of child rape had been traced to a cellphone tied to Stumbo, according to a criminal complaint filed at Metropolitan Court. From October 2023 until March 2024, authorities received tips that Stumbo’s phone uploaded videos with men raping “pre-pubescent” females.

Deputies said the FBI interviewed Stumbo in April, and he told them he “may have accidentally downloaded” the videos on the messaging app, Telegram, and then deleted them. Stumbo later told the FBI he bought packages of videos over the social media app and did not remember if they included videos of child rape.

During the interview, an FBI agent was able to find a screenshot of one of the alleged child rape videos on Stumbo’s phone.

“At one point, Stumbo (said he) stopped using Telegram because it was getting ‘weird,’ but got back on Telegram due to boredom,” the complaint states. Stumbo was released as the FBI investigated further.

A search of multiple phones tied to Stumbo found a total of 517 images and/or videos of child rape, according to the complaint.

Deputies said the FBI’s search also found Stumbo had traded the files — sending 14 such videos — with other Telegram users. In one conversation, a user who sent Stumbo videos asked “You like?” and Stumbo replied, “Yes, sir … Haven’t got to watch a lot. I work a lot.”

In late April, Stumbo reached out to federal authorities “to inquire about the status of the investigation” and was told child rape videos were found on his phone, the complaint states. During the phone call, Stumbo’s wife was “overheard in the background” saying the child rape videos were “downloaded on accident.”
