Man charged with possessing firearms, ammunition ‘in plain view’ of 13-year-old son

The man who was arrested on suspicion of possessing firearms and narcotics in the home where his 13-year-old son also resided was charged Monday with seven felony counts in Kern County Superior Court.

Steven Kirkpatrick, 35, was charged with two counts of possessing a firearm as a felon, one count of possessing an assault rifle, one count of possessing ammunition as someone prohibited from owning a firearm, two counts of possessing a silencer and one count of possessing a controlled substance.

According to a search warrant filed at the Kern County Superior Court, Kirkpatrick’s mother reported to Bakersfield police that Kirkpatrick was standing in the doorway of the home while holding a firearm that had a suppressor. She also said Kirkpatrick’s 13-year-old son was inside the home as well.

The Bakersfield Police Department said in an earlier news release that Kirkpatrick was arrested Thursday in the 200 block of Starmount Lane after a search warrant for the home found a polymer 80 pistol with a suppressor, a disassembled AR-15 rifle, high capacity magazines and illegal prescription medication.

During the investigation, Kirkpatrick admitted to owning the firearms and ammunition, most of which were in plain view. When officers asked if there were additional firearms inside the home, Kirkpatrick said he did not wish to answer, according to the report.

The report also said Kirkpatrick displayed signs of being under the influence of narcotics, such as dilated pupils, rapid eyelid and finger tremors and rapid, jerky body movements.

Kirkpatrick was previously convicted of purchasing and selling narcotics in 2011, according to the report.
