Man dies after being detained by deputies at park in Hesperia

A man displaying “erratic behavior” and refusing to leave a Hesperia park died after being handcuffed on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Park rangers requested help from deputies about 5:40 p.m. regarding a man who was refusing to leave Lime Street Park, 16292 Lime Street, about 5:40 p.m., according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

The man was inside a bathroom when deputies arrived, the department said in a written statement. Deputies and the rangers escorted him out.

“The male subject displayed erratic behavior and refused to comply,” the statement said. The suspect was placed into handcuffs, and medical assistance was called in “as a precaution.”

“During the incident, the male subject stopped breathing and deputies administered CPR until medical aid arrived,” according to the statement. “The male subject was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”

The identity of the man was not available pending notification of family, officials said. He was described as 42 years old.

Detectives from the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigation Division took over the investigation, according to the agency. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office will determine an official cause of death through an autopsy.

No further information was available Sunday afternoon.
