A man is dead after an officer shot him in early morning hours Saturday, according to Shelby Police Department.
Shelby Police officers responded to a domestic dispute at the Oak Tree Lodge at 1530 E. Dixon Blvd., located not far from Showmars, just before 4:30 a.m., according to a news release from the department.
“Upon their arrival, they encountered a male subject armed with several knives,” the release said. “As officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, gunshots were fired and the armed male was struck by gunfire.”
Cleveland County Emergency Medical Services and Shelby Fire and Rescue were immediately called, and officers on scene provided first aid assistance until they arrived, the release said.
The man was taken to Atrium Health Cleveland where he later died as a result of his injuries.
The release said as is normal protocol, the NC State Bureau of Investigation was notified, and the agency will be conducting an investigation into the incident.
“In addition, the officer involved in this incident has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation,” the release said. “The names of those involved are not being released at this time. No additional information is available.”
