A 36-year-old man fleeing authorities collided with a vehicle at a near north side intersection and then careened into the new Milwaukee Public Library branch currently under construction, according to authorities.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Tuesday that an MCSO squad was surveilling a home in the area of North Second and West Lloyd streets, attempting to locate a man who was wanted for a prior burglary, as well as fleeing and eluding.
The sheriff’s office said the man exited the home at about 1:30 p.m. and entered a vehicle. Deputies attempted to pull the man over and he did stop briefly but almost immediately fled the traffic stop and a pursuit ensued, authorities said.
Less than a mile later, at the intersection of North Dr. Martin Luther King Drive and West Locust Street, the suspected vehicle ran a red light, struck another vehicle driven by a 19-year-old man and careened into the library construction site, according to the sheriff’s office.
The 19-year-old man was uninjured but his vehicle was seriously damaged. The 36-year-old man was arrested at the crash scene and charges are pending, the sheriff’s office said. No deputies were injured.
A 23-year-old construction worker inside the building site reported leg pain and was examined by the Milwaukee Fire Department and cleared, the sheriff’s office said.
