Man in custody after threatening police, hours-long standoff at Butler Twp hotel

Dec. 9—A man is in custody pending charges after an hours-long standoff at a Butler Twp. Red Roof Inn.

In a release, Butler Twp. police said that just after 10 a.m. crews were called to the Red Roof Inn at 7370 Miller Lane. Police said that management had called officers to trespass a man for making threats with a knife.

When police tried to contact the man in one of the hotel rooms, he refused to open the door and threatened to shoot the officers, the release said. After trying to get the man to give himself up for 45 minutes, police requested Montgomery County Regional SWAT and Hostage Negotiation Team to respond.

After SWAT and the negotiation team arrived, negotiations continued over “numerous phone calls” over the course of several hours, the release said.

Finally, SWAT “introduced copious amounts of teat gas to the motel room through the front windows,” and eventually the man came out. He was immediately arrested, the release said, and taken to Miami Valley Hospital for evaluation due to the gas exposure, police said.

Police said that alcohol or drug use could have had impact on the standoff.

He was transferred to the Montgomery County Jail pending approval of charges by the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.
