A man was fatally shot by officers early Thursday after Amarillo police responded to a 911 hang-up call at a home on South Travis Street, authorities said.
Officers were dispatched to the residence in the 5200 block of South Travis Street at 2:36 a.m., according to the Amarillo Police Department. The homeowner granted officers entry and indicated that another resident likely made the 911 call.
Police said officers attempted to speak with the individual, who exited a room holding a loaded handgun and began firing at officers. Officers returned fire, striking the man.
Officers provided life-saving measures at the scene until emergency medical responders arrived. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
No other individuals were injured during the incident.
The Amarillo Police Department’s Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene, and the case remains under investigation.
