Man remains behind bars after murder, torture charges

A man will remain in custody after allegedly kidnapping three people and torturing them for hours, leaving one of them dead.

Samuel David Vernon, 31, is facing charges of murder, kidnapping, torture, armed robbery and grievous bodily harm.

He faced Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday wearing a green long-sleeved shirt and green shorts with a closely-shaved head.

Police allege a 52-year-old man and two friends met Vernon in Inala, an outer suburb of Brisbane, on January 5 and were kidnapped with the “significant threat of violence”.

The trio were taken to a different location where they were allegedly tortured over several hours before being taken back to their car.

The 52-year-old was taken to Logan Hospital by the two friends with serious injuries.

He died in hospital as a result of his injuries on Tuesday.

One of the other men suffered cuts, bruises and a broken leg, and the other had serious facial injuries.

Police allege the attack was a planned and coordinated effort to extort the victims.

“We don’t for one second think this was a random event that occurred,” Detective Inspector Chris Knight said on Friday.

“We believe that they either knew the individuals personally or were introduced by a third party, but some of those facts are still being explored.”

Det Knight said the extent of violence in the offence is not unprecedented but “highly unusual”.

Vernon did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody.

Magistrates courts in Queensland are unable to grant offenders charged with murder bail – instead the accused must apply in the Supreme Court.

Vernon will face Richlands Magistrates Court on January 24.
