Man sought for almost 10 months arrested in pair of East Village shootings

A Des Moines man sought for almost 10 months in a pair of shootings after leaving the since-closed Pura Social Club location in the East Village has been arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail on two charges of attempted murder.

Court and Polk County Jail records show Cori Jayvon Shields, 26, was taken to the jail on Jan. 10 and remained there Sunday, with bond set at $100,000 cash. The records did not detail the circumstances of Shields’ arrest.

According to a criminal complaint filed against Shields, dating from March 29, 2024, witnesses identified him as the man who shot Michael Goodson and Tabitha Williams in the early morning hours of March 24, then fled the scene.

The complaint said Shields after exiting Pura was in the vicinity of the 600 block of East Fifth St., where one of his family members was caught on cellphone video punching a woman. When Goodson stepped close to the woman and appeared to hike his pants up, Shields began firing shots at Goodson, the complaint said.

Goodson was wounded near the throat and in the stomach and Tabitha Williamson, who Shields may not have been targeting, was shot in the stomach, the complaint said. Both were taken to a hospital.

Shields, who was wearing what the complaint said was “a unique red jacket with white sleeves and red pants,” was seen on surveillance video from a nearby building around the time of the shooting, and on other surveillance video leaving an apartment building before going to Pura. In addition, it said, a short video of the shooting showed his clothing, and cellphone-related records placed him at the scene at the time of the shootings.

He fled south a short time after the shootings, the complaint said.
