Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach to have watch party for Trump’s inauguration

Mar-a-Lago members who aren’t going to Washington, D.C., for President-elect Donald Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration are scheduled to gather Monday at the Palm Beach club for a watch party.

A source confirmed to Palm Beach Daily News that the event will include a luncheon and live video of the ceremony as Trump is sworn in as the 47th president of the United States at the Capitol on Monday.

Mar-a-Lago has been the hub of Trump’s transition to the White House, with the president-elect playing host to a number of dignitaries and business leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The historic 17-acre estate where club members will gather to mark Trump’s swearing-in was completed in 1927 by cereal heiress Marjorie Meriweather Post, a doyenne of Palm Beach society who bequeathed the property to the National Park Service when she died in 1973.

The Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach will host an Inauguration Day luncheon and watch party for members as its owner, President-elect Donald Trump, is sworn in as the 47th president of the United States.

The government returned Mar-a-Lago to the Post Foundation in 1981, citing concerns about the costs of upkeep and security. At the time, the Secret Service and State Department did not want Mar-a-Lago to be used as lodging for presidents and dignitaries, because they said the property was too large to properly secure. The agencies also said the estate’s position under the flight path to Palm Beach International Airport made it vulnerable, according to news reports from that time.

Trump paid about $10 million for Mar-a-Lago in 1985.

Mar-a-Lago, now a National Historic Landmark, is the centerpiece of Trump’s real estate portfolio.

Post’s vision for Mar-a-Lago to serve as a “Winter White House” or “Camp David of the South” was realized during Trump’s first term, as he hosted world leaders and directed major national and foreign policy decisions from his Palm Beach home.
