A 20-year-old Maryland man is being held in prison on $2 million cash bail for the January 2024 shooting death of a young man in Wilmington’s Hilltop neighborhood, police said Friday.
Naim Hassan-El, of Snow Hill, Maryland, was named as a suspect almost immediately after the Jan. 22, 2024 shooting, which left 23-year-old Makhi Swanson dead. The assault occurred in the 300 block of N. Scott St. a little before 3:15 p.m.
Responding police found Swanson critically injured. Paramedics rushed him to a local hospital, where he later died.
An obituary said he loved playing basketball and running track.
Police said Friday that Hassan-El was indicted by a New Castle County Grand Jury on Jan. 29 − just one week after the shooting occurred. He wasn’t arrested until late October, however, when he was found in Worchester County, Maryland.
