Meet the latest nominees for the Iowa City Press-Citizen Student of the Week

The Iowa City Press-Citizen Student of the Week poll has returned for another round of voting.

Each week, Johnson County high school principals and faculty are asked to nominate students who excel in and out of the classroom.

The public can vote at press-citizen.com until noon on Thursday, Jan. 16. The winner will be announced on Friday, Jan. 17, and an accompanying story will be published in the Press-Citizen.

Students from public and private high schools in Johnson County are eligible to participate.

Iowa City High School senior Oliver Palmer was the most recent student of the week.

Madeline Austin, Iowa City Liberty High School

Iowa City Liberty High School senior Madeline Austin has been an active leader within the greater North Liberty area and Liberty’s show choirs, jazz choirs, and school musicals. Some of Austin’s notable accomplishments include Opus Honors Choirs as a freshman, two years of All-State Choir, four outstanding soloist awards at various show choir competitions, and being an outstanding jazz soloist at the North Polk Competition. Austin was also a featured soloist with the Voltage varsity jazz choir at the Jazz Educators Network conference in New Orleans, placing first in both the musical theater and commercial music divisions at the Central Region NATS competition.

Paul Weiner, Iowa City Regina Catholic High School

Iowa City Regina Catholic High School junior Paul Weiner is a top student. By the end of his junior year, Weiner will have completed eight Advanced Placement courses while maintaining a GPA over 4.0. Weiner is also involved in baseball, cross country, track, and basketball and was chosen to be the National Honor Society vice president. He is a part of Regina’s Tanzania Book Project and also tutors other students at Regina.

“(Weiner) exemplifies what it means to follow the REGAL Way through reliability, effort, God-centeredness, attitude, and leadership,” Regina Principal Glenn Plummer said.

About Student of the Week

The Press-Citizen’s Student of the Week is a weekly contest throughout the academic year. Polls will open on Mondays and close on Thursdays. Students from public and private high schools in the Iowa City area are eligible to participate.
