In Juan Soto and Clay Homes, the Mets have already inked a pair of former Yankees this offseason.
But could they be targeting another former Pinstriper?
According to ESPN’s Jorge Castillo, the Mets, Yankees, Padres, Rangers, and Blue Jays have all expressed “heavy interest” in right-handed reliever Jonathan Loaisiga.
When healthy, Loaisiga features a nasty four-pitch mix with his sinker, four-seamer, curveball, and changeup. He relies heavily on his sinker, which averages right around 98 mph, while his breaking ball averaged 9.8 inches of horizontal break in 2024, per Baseball Savant.
But health is a major question for the 30-year-old, as a pair of injuries limited him to just 20 appearances over the last two seasons. He dealt with shoulder inflammation in 2022, and then needed surgery to remove bone spurs from his elbow in 2023.
Hoping to make a triumphant return in 2024, Loaisiga made just three appearances before being shut down and needing surgery to repair a torn UCL. The righty had the internal brace surgery, not the traditional Tommy John, in an effort to trim his recovery time. He underwent the surgery in April, and with a 10-12 month typical recovery time, he could be ready for Opening Day, if not soon after.
Over the course of his career, Loaisiga owns a 3.44 ERA while making 163 appearances, all with the Yankees.
