Midland Habitat for Humanity dedicates 200th house in program’s history

Dec. 19—MIDLAND — Midland Habitat for Humanity (MHFH) celebrated their latest homeowner Tuesday with the dedication of its 200th home in the 200 block of North Adams Street to the Vinyette Moore family.

Habitat supporters, friends, family, and future Habitat homeowners gathered to support the new homeowner. The Beal Foundation generously provided funding for the build.

Moore worked over 250 hours of “sweat equity” in addition to completing Habitat’s Homeowner College program with classes on personal finance, homeowner maintenance, civic engagement, health and wellness, and more.

“This is an exciting day for Habitat but also for the Moore family. We are thankful for the Beal Foundation and their generous support to help fund this home. Vinyette worked hard to make this a reality and we’re thrilled she made it in before Christmas! We want to thank the entire community for helping us get to 200 homes and we are excited to get to work on the next 200!” Joey Hopkins, MHFH’s executive director, said in a news release.

Moore plans to get her teaching certificate to help her to continue to provide for her family of five.

Since 1991 MHFH has completed 200 homes with 48 of those coming in the last few years. Habitat has had 66 homeowners pay off their home in full. Over 800 West Texans call a MHFH house their home.

Based on production, MHFH is 6th out of 61 Habitat affiliates in the state of Texas and in the top 6% of affiliates nationwide. The 200 MHFH homes in West Texas are valued at more than $35 million, helping to fund all the local taxing entities.

MHFH is one of the premier institutions responsible for constructing affordable housing in the Permian Basin. The organization’s partnership model offers deserving, hard-working families a hand-up. MHFH uses a rigorous qualifying process that includes progress from the application through homeownership.

Each participant contributes a minimum of 250 hours of “sweat equity” on the worksite and completes a homeownership education program. Successful candidates are then awarded a 0% interest mortgage, making homeownership a reality for some of the most deserving families in the Permian Basin.
