MLK holiday, Melania wedding anniversary, Barron Trump and NYU

The week of Jan. 20, 2025, will be a busy one for Donald Trump, who was elected to be the 47th president, along with his running mate Vice President-elect JD Vance.

It kicks off, after all, with Inauguration Day − when the president-elect and vice president-elect are sworn into office.

Though President Joe Biden is still in the White House and will be until Inauguration Day on Jan. 20, there’s a lot that will happen in the next month.

  • Donald Trump will begin his second term as president on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, 2025, with Melania Trump as first lady. Jan. 20 also is MLK Day, the federal holiday that honors civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

  • Donald and Melania Trump will celebrate a milestone wedding anniversary: The couple was married Jan. 25, 2005, in Palm Beach, Florida.

Below are things to know about Inauguration Day, a countdown clock for when it occurs next year and other highlights about that week in January.

When does Trump take office? When is Inauguration Day 2025?

As of Friday, Dec. 20, 2024, we are one month away from Donald Trump’s second term in the White House.

Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election, and his term in the White House was from 2017 to 2021.

Donald Trump lost the 2020 presidential election to President Joe Biden. He returned to his private club, Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, on Jan. 20, 2021.

Trump won the 2024 presidential election against Democratic challenger, Vice President Kamala Harris. His second term in office starts Jan. 20, 2025.

This year, Inauguration Day will take place on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025.

Typically, Inauguration Day occurs every four years on Jan. 20 (or Jan. 21 if Jan. 20 falls on a Sunday). The inauguration ceremony is held outside of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Do the president and vice president-elect take an oath?

According to USA.gov, the vice president-elect is sworn in first and repeats the same oath of office, which has been in use since 1884, as senators, representatives, and other federal employees.

That oath goes as follows:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

At noon, the president-elect takes the following oath as stipulated by Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

What events take place on Inauguration Day?

The events, including the swearing-in, the inaugural address, and the pass-in review, are organized by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC).

The JCCIC offers a limited number of inauguration tickets to the public through members of Congress. These tickets are free and grant access to watch the president and vice president being sworn in at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 20, 2025.

Here is a full rundown of Inauguration Day:

  • A swearing-in ceremony for the president and vice president

  • Inaugural address by the president

  • Inaugural balls and celebrations

What will happen to Trump’s private club in Palm Beach, Florida, Mar-a-Lago? Will Mar-a-Lago be ‘Southern White House’ in 2025?

Donald, Melania and Barron Trump have lived at Mar-a-Lago, which means “Sea to Lake” in Spanish, since 2019. When Trump was president from 2017 to 2021, he would host events there and drop in for events and galas unexpectedly. He also did presidential business there. Donald Trump nicknamed his private club the “Southern White House” or the “Winter White House.”

In 1985, Donald Trump paid for $10 million for the 17-acre estate, which featured 33 bathrooms, three bomb shelters, and a nine-hole golf course. A mere 10 years later, he converted it into a private club with a spa, tennis, and croquet courts, a new ballroom, and a beach club.

In 2005, Donald and Melania Trump were married at Bethesda-By-the-Sea Church in Palm Beach, which is near Mar-a-Lago, and held the reception at Trump’s private club (see below).

Will Barron Trump, only child of Donald and Melania Trump, move back in to the White House when he’s not at NYU?

When Barron Trump graduated from Oxford Academy in West Palm Beach in May 2024, he enrolled in New York University’s Stern School of Business for fall 2024. Though Mar-a-Lago is still home to Barron Trump, news reports have said he is staying at Trump Tower in Manhattan, New York, as he attends college nearby.

According to NYU’s calendar, winter break for NYU students is Dec. 21, 2024, to Jan. 21, 2025, a day after Inauguration Day.

It is not known whether Barron Trump will return to the White House when school is not in session. It is likely the 18-year-old college freshman will still frequent the estate.

Donald and Melania Trump were married Jan. 25, 2005, at Bethesda-By-the-Sea Church in Palm Beach, Florida, followed by a wedding reception in the “Donald J. Trump ballroom” at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private club.

The couple will celebrate their 20th anniversary on Jan. 25, 2025, five days after Donald Trump’s second Inauguration Day.
