MLK weekend traffic restrictions in the Valley: What to know before hitting the road

As Martin Luther King Jr. Day approaches and people look forward to the second three-day weekend of year, traffic restrictions around the Valley can tamper down the fun.

If you’re hitting the road for the weekend to attend one of the many parades or enjoying the cooler weather expected to hit by Monday, make sure to keep these freeway closures and restrictions in mind.

Notable closures will be on eastbound Loop 101 and Interstate 10. There will also be a few lane restrictions on eastbound I-10.

Here are the restrictions to know about before hitting the road for MLK Day weekend (Jan. 17-20).

Eastbound Loop 101 closed between Cave Creek Road and State Route 51

The closure in north Phoenix will last from 9 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday for pavement maintenance. The eastbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Seventh Street and Cave Creek Road will also be closed, but the northbound SR 51 ramps to eastbound Loop 101 will remain open.

Detour: Exit ahead of the closure and use eastbound Union Hills Drive or Deer Valley Road to Tatum Boulevard to reach Loop 101 beyond the closure.

Eastbound I-10 closed between Interstate 17 and SR 51

The closure between the Stack interchange and the Ministack interchange will last from 9 p.m. on Friday to 9 a.m. on Saturday for scheduled tunnel maintenance.

Detour: Eastbound I-10 traffic can detour on southbound I-17 and reconnect with I-10 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Westbound I-10 closed between I-17 and Seventh Avenue

The closure between the Split interchange near Sky Harbor Airport and Seventh Avenue in downtown Phoenix will last from 9 p.m. on Saturday to 9 a.m. on Sunday for scheduled tunnel maintenance. Southbound SR 51 ramp to westbound I-10; southbound I-17 ramp to westbound I-10; and westbound Loop 202 ramps to westbound I-10 will be closed.

Detour: Westbound I-10 traffic can detour on northbound I-17 and reconnect with I-10 at the Stack interchange north of Van Buren Street. Drivers in the southeast Valley can also use westbound/northbound Loop 202 to reach I-10 near 59th Avenue.

Eastbound I-10 to be narrowed near Sky Harbor

The lanes will be narrowed to two lanes between I-17 and 32nd Street near Sky Harbor Airport and three lanes between Southern Avenue and Baseline Road. The restriction will occur from 10 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday for bridge and pavement work associated with the Broadway Curve Improvement Project.

The Arizona Department of Transportation recommended drivers allow for extra travel time and prepare to slow down and merge safely.

Westbound U.S. 60 ramp to eastbound I-10 closed

The ramp closure will occur from 10 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday for bridge work.

Detour: Drivers can use westbound I-10 to Broadway Road, turning to use the eastbound I-10 on-ramp. Drivers on U.S. 60 can also travel south on Loop 101 to westbound Loop 202 to reach I-10.
