More than 2 dozen vehicles vandalized at apartments over weekend, Sioux Falls Police say

Officers are investigating a string of vandalisms from the weekend that left more than two dozen vehicles without windows, Sioux Falls Police Department spokesperson Sam Clemens said in Monday’s police briefing for media.

Police believe most of the incidents occurred early Sunday morning, with one rash of incidents occurring Saturday morning near North Holly Avenue, Clemens said. There were some reports of suspicious activity noted to police at about 5 a.m. Saturday.

Of the 33 total cars with windows broken out during the weekend,

  • 17 were parked in the 2300 block of South Ellis Road

  • Nine were parked near South Cathy Avenue and West 45th Street

  • Three were parked on West Equestrian Place

  • Four were parked in the 300 block of North Holly Avenue

Police do not have any suspects and are asking anyone with information to call the department or Crime Stoppers, Clemens said.

“With this number of cars that were damaged in apartment parking lots, it’s probably a good chance that somebody may have saw something,” Clemens said. “If they saw anything, those are the people we want to call.”

Officers do not believe anything was taken from the vehicles, Clemens said.

Additionally, Clemens said in the past, the total number of break-ins in a specific area such as these can fluctuate as people report incidents.

Clemens urged residents to be aware of their surroundings, such as listening for unusual noises outside their residences or noting residents checking multiple car doors.

“There’s times when people have to park outside,” Clemens said. “I mean, that’s just the reality of it. Not everybody can park in a garage. Whether you’re parked on the street, in your driveway, in a parking lot at a store, or apartment complex, sometimes there’s just an inherent risk and you don’t know who’s going to come through and choose to do damage to cars. And that’s what we’re looking at here.”
