Memphis Shelby County Schools have cancelled all after school activities for Thursday prior to snow hitting the area.
Memphis is under a winter storm warning beginning Thursday evening and ending Saturday morning. The warning includes advisories about heavy snow accumulation, hazardous travel conditions, slow commutes and frigid temperatures.
“All district practices, athletic events and evening activities are canceled today January 9. YCare will be open today until 6 pm,” Jermaine Johnson, the Strategic Communications Officer for Memphis Shelby County Schools, told the Commercial Appeal.
There has not been an announcement for school closures.

Memphis school closures
As of 12:45 p.m. Thursday, none of the Memphis-area school districts have cancelled classes for Friday, Jan. 10.
Christian Brothers University announced it would close its campus on Friday due to the inclement weather forecast.
How do schools decide to close for snow?
Travel is one of the biggest factors when decided snow school closures.
If buses are unable to drive into neighborhoods to pick up students, there will likely be school closures. Districts will determine whether classes will take place mostly based on whether it is safe for students to get to and from school.

Thursday should have a high of 38 degrees and a low of 30 degrees. There is a 90% chance of precipitation and snow is likely after midnight. Snow accumulation is expected to be around an inch.

Friday‘s forecast includes snow, and it could be heavy at times. There is a 90% chance of precipitation and a projected high of 33 degrees. New snow accumulation will be between three and five inches. The low for the evening is 22 degrees.

Saturday is expected to have a high of 32 degrees and a low of 21 degrees.

Sunday will warm up with a high of 40 degrees and a low of 26 degrees.

Monday will have a high near 36 degrees and a low of 20 degrees.

Tuesday could see a high of 37 degrees with a low of 24 degrees.
