Multiple crashes reported around Fort Collins as cold, snow create slippery roads

Multiple crashes have taken place early Tuesday morning around Fort Collins as ongoing snowfall and cold temperatures are creating slippery travel conditions in the city as well as Interstate 25 and surrounding roads during the morning commute.

The PulsePoint app showed two crashes on I-25, one on Harmony Road at the I-25 interchange and one on Colorado Highway 14 east of I-25 before 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Poudre School District students are set to return to school from winter break Tuesday.

The National Weather Service said on X widespread light to locally moderate snow will continue across the I-25 corridor and Eastern Plains through 9 a.m. Tuesday before changing to snow showers and gradually drying out by the afternoon.

The Fort Collins area is forecast to see less than an inch of additional snow Tuesday morning but temperatures will remain well below freezing, with a high of 24, according the service. That will keep roads icy and snow covered in spots.

The service forecast called for Fort Collins to receive 3 to 4 inches of snow Monday into Tuesday.

Drivers are urged to slow down and be prepared for slick driving conditions.

The cold will hang around Fort Collins with a low around 3 degrees Tuesday night and wind chill as low as minus-5.

Wednesday will be sunny, with a high near 3, but will see wind chill as low as minus-3.

Thursday’s forecast calls for a 40% chance of snow in the morning with a high of 35, north-northwest wind 13 to 20 mph, gusting to 32 mph, and low around 6.

The overnight and continuing snow in Fort Collins prompted Front Range Community College to delay opening of the campus until 10 a.m. Tuesday. The college is on winter break.

Fort Collins activated its emergency weather shelter plan for Tuesday night due to the expected cold temperatures.
