All of Middle Tennessee will experience bitterly cold temperatures beginning Saturday, as arctic air plunges from the North and makes its way across the country.
The entire region will be at or below freezing for at least 72 hours beginning Saturday night, reported the National Weather Service Thursday. Lows are expected to fall into the single digits and teens with highs staying in the teens and 20s.
“Get ready to bundle up! The last time we hit single digits at BNA was Jan. 21, 2024,” said the weather service.
Some snowflakes are possible Saturday evening, primarily throughout the Cumberland Plateau region, however, no significant snow accumulation is expected.

How to prepare for freezing temperatures
Frostbite and hypothermia are possible during periods of cold weather. People exposed to extreme cold are susceptible to frostbite and can succumb to hypothermia in a matter of minutes, states the weather service.
Wearing layers of loose-fitting, lightweight and warm clothing, including mittens and hats is recommended.
In order to best protect yourself and your home, the weather service recommends the following:
-
Be aware of the forecast: Make checking the forecast part of your regular routine so you’ll know when to expect cold weather.
-
Adjust your schedule: If possible, avoid being outside during the coldest part of the day, typically the early morning. Try to find a warm spot for your children while waiting for the school bus outside.
-
Protect pets, livestock and other property: If you have pets or farm animals, make sure they are not overly exposed to extreme cold and have plenty of food and water that has not frozen. Take precautions to ensure your water pipes do not freeze. Know the temperature thresholds of your plants and crops.
-
Fill up the tank: Make sure your car or vehicle has at least a half a tank of gas during extreme cold so that you can stay warm if you become stranded.
Stay prepared: How to prevent frozen pipes, keep your home warm ahead of season
