Bagel lovers can rejoice with their favorite blueberry, poppyseed, cinnamon or everything bagel on Wednesday, National Bagel Day, as delis and bakeries in Michigan celebrating with special deals to honor the versatile baked good.
Bagels may look like doughnuts on the surface, but they’re actually much closer to bread than the sugary treats.
Bagels start with bread flour, then are boiled, which gives them their shiny exterior. Finally they’re seasoned and baked.
One story of bagels’ origins says they date to the 1600s when Polish Jews boiled their bread before baking it to get around anti-semitic laws.
In other histories, the bagel we know today dates back to 1683 as a salute to King Jan Sobieski, who had just successfully led Poland against Turkish invaders. To honor the equine enthusiast, a Polish baker shaped his obwarzanek into circles meant to resemble boot stirrups, the German term for which is “beugel.”

Panera Bread offers rewards with purchase
Panera is launching a “Bagel Bash” deal from Jan. 15 to 21. MyPanera members will earn a reward for a free bagel, with the purchase of an Asiago Bagel Stack sandwich, their newest and limited time only bagel. Use the store locator to find the nearest Panera Bread.
Einstein Bros Bagels has deal

Calling it the “give it up” for the Einstein Bros deal, they are offering one free egg bagel sandwich if you order online or in the app and sign up for rewards. To find their Michigan locations use their store locator.
Biggby Coffee offers discount
Biggy Coffee is also partaking in the celebration with 50% off all bragel sandwiches, according to a Facebook post. The offer is good only during National Bagel Day.
Bruegger’s Bagels says join rewards, get a bagel
Bruegger’s Bagel’s is offering a free bagel with cream cheese for those who join rewards on the special day. To find a Brugger’s location nearby, use their store locator.
What other National Bagel Day deals are there?
Target is offering customers $1 off Canyon Bakery Bread Bagels through Jan. 18.
Kroger on Jan. 15 is offering any two Lender’s Bagels packs for only $5.
Where can I find a good bagel in Michigan?
There are many places in Michigan to find homemade bagels, among them are:
L’Chayim Delicatessen, in business since 1992, has locations in Beulah, 274 S. Benzie Blvd., Frankfort, 318 Main St., and Glen Arbor, 6404 Western Ave.
The Original Bagel Factory, 24551 W. 12 Mile Road in Southfield, says its one of Detroit’s original bagel shops. It’s offerings are certified kosher. They offer 25 varieties.
New York Bagel, with locations in Ferndale 23316 Woodward Ave., West Bloomfield, 6927 Orchard Lake Road, and Southfield, 30760 Southfield Road, dates to 1921 and makes 18 different styles of bagels.
Terra Bagels, 1413 Lake Drive SE and 40 Pearl St. NW in Grand Rapids, gets top marks. “We take our skills and hand-craft our bagels before the most important step: boiling them. We do this fresh every morning so you can enjoy the best bagel experience,” the store says of its 15 varieties.
The New Daily Bagel, 309 S. Washington Square in Lansing, offers scratch-made bagels daily in 13 different varieties.
