Nationwide data breach at software provider used by Alabama schools

An education software provider used by Alabama schools that has access to student names, addresses and email addresses has been compromised, school officials confirmed.

PowerSchool serves districts throughout the nation and had a national cybersecurity incident nationwide, according to Newsweek.

Montgomery Public Schools received word of the incident Wednesday, but the district stated that PowerSchool identified the breach Dec. 28. An MPS spokesperson said in an email to parents that the breach did not contain social security numbers.

“PowerSchool has implemented enhanced security measures, deactivated the compromised credentials and is offering credit monitoring and identity protection services for certain impacted individuals,” according to the email.

Tuscaloosa City Schools also uses PowerSchool and received word about the incident, according to an email sent to staff and parents.
