NCMC will add a new housing option for seasonal workforce next summer

PETOSKEY — North Central Michigan College will open its residence hall on Howard Street next summer to the seasonal workforce.

Eligibility to live in the hall will extend beyond North Central’s student body, according to Laura Wolgast, NCMC’s Food Service and Conference Center director.

“Our summer housing is open to seasonal employees, interns and students working or interning in Northern Michigan during the summer months. This program is designed to support the broader community by providing affordable, convenient housing options for those contributing to our local economy,” she said.

In previous summers, a large nonprofit group from Ohio booked a significant number of residence hall rooms. This year, that group will not be returning, which means a substantial number of rooms will be available, Wolgast said.

North Central Michigan College will open its residence hall to seasonal employees and others next summer. Eligibility to live in the hall will extend beyond North Central’s student body.

“Our pricing is designed to be flexible and affordable,” added Wolgast.

Long-term rentals (30 days or more) are priced at $28 per person, per night for double occupancy and $35 per person, per night for single occupancy.

For short-term rentals (fewer than 30 days), it will cost $55 per night with a two-night minimum, subject to availability based on long-term bookings.

“This program appeals to a diverse group, including seasonal employees, college students completing internships and young professionals. Employers in industries such as tourism, hospitality and retail will also find this housing option valuable for supporting their summer workforce,” Wolgast said.

So far, NCMC hasn’t received pushback from the area’s lodging facilities on the housing plan.

“Petoskey’s business community has been very supportive. Our focus is on filling a critical gap in affordable, short-term housing for the summer workforce, which complements, rather than competes with, local landlords, hotels and motels. By providing housing for seasonal employees and interns, we’re helping ensure that local businesses can meet the demands of peak season, benefiting the entire community,” Wolgast said.
