New K-9 units getting drugs, weapons off streets

Jan. 24—bluefield, va. — Two K-9 units recently introduced by the Bluefield, Va. Police Department have already assisted in getting illegal drugs off the streets.

In a statement released by the police department, the agency said the new K-9s — K-9 Dolly and K-9 Luna — have only been on the job for a short time and have already assisted with some big drug seizures.

The statement, released by the police department on its Facebook page, said the new K-9 units and their handlers have helped in getting the drugs and dangerous weapons off the street and out of the Bluefield, Va. community.

“These highly trained canines will play a vital role in enhancing the safety and security of our community,” the police department statement said. “Their unique skills will strengthen our efforts in crime prevention, and foster a safer community. These four-legged heroes and their partners are dedicated to protecting Bluefield and everyone who calls it home.”

The statement added that Officer Casey Justice and Officer Ryan Davis are the K9 handlers.

The police department also recently secured a new side-by-side off-road vehicle with assistance from the Community Foundation of the Virginias that will be used for search and rescue efforts and other police department responses where a normal police vehicle cannot be utilized.
