New mayor pledges to ‘putting Hillsborough first’

HILLSBOROUGH – John Ciccarelli, the township’s mayor for 2025, has pledged that Hillsborough “will continue its no-nonsense, common sense approach” to government.

That, he said at the Township Committee’s reorganization meeting on Jan. 2, will “keep Hillsborough one of the best places to live in the United States.”

Ciccarelli will succeed Robert Britting as mayor, who will remain on the Township Committee after being re-elected to a three-year term. Catherine Payne was selected by her fellow Committee members as deputy mayor.

In his first address as mayor, Ciccarelli said the Township Committee will continue to focus on fiscal responsibility, take a business approach to government, improve the township’s infrastructure, protect and expand open space and continue to support the police department.

“We have a lot of serious work to do,” he said.

In addition, the township will closely monitor the Route 206 plan and work with the state to push for progress on the long-awaited project, he said.

The mayor also said he is committed to honesty, “putting Hillsborough first” and “protecting the values of the town.”

“I won’t let you or the 43,000 residents of Hillsborough down,” he said.

Ciccarelli has lived in the township for 24 years. A licensed professional engineer, he is a graduate of the University of Delaware with a B.S. in civil engineering, and also has an M.B.A. with a real estate concentration from Rutgers.

Before being elected to the Township Committee, he was a member of the township Planning Board. He is also a past president of the Hillsborough Soccer Club.

He and his wife Kim have two daughters, Sydney and Alexa.
