New Year’s traffic stop results in major drug charges

Jan. 8—Two men are behind bars after being busted in the Walmart parking lot with large amounts of narcotics on New Year’s Day.

Richard Mark Burt, 52, of Candler, and Kevin Lee Chapman, 41, of Waynesville, were charged with multiple trafficking charges.

The arrests came after sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop at Walmart. Records do not indicate the type of traffic stop involved. The traffic stop led to the discovery of 27.3 grams of suspected fentanyl, 14.9 grams of suspected methamphetamine and 45 dosage units of Xanax.

Both were charged with two counts of trafficking opium or heroin, possession of a schedule II controlled substance and possession of a schedule IV controlled substance.

Burt was also charged with maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for controlled substances for the 2025 Honda CRV he was driving at the time of the arrest.

Chapman was charged with identity theft after giving the deputy performing the traffic stop a false name, birthdate and social security number. Chapman claimed his name was Joshua Michael Moss, according to the magistrate’s order issued.

Burt is being held on a $100,000 bond, while Chapman is being held on a $180,000 bond.
