NJ Lottery to host Rock Paper Scissors Throwdown at American Dream with $10k first prize

Do you think you have what it takes to be New Jersey’s first-ever rock paper scissors champion?

In March, the New Jersey Lottery will be hosting the Rock Paper Scissors Throwdown, the first-ever competition of its kind in the state.

During the throwdown, which will take place on March 29 and 30 at American Dream in East Rutherford, 384 competitors will play rock paper scissors in a total of 383 matches.

The Top 12 finishers in the tournament will receive a share of $25,000 in prize money and the first prize winner will go home with $10,000.

The rules

While most of us probably know the general idea of rock paper scissors, the NJ Lottery Rock Paper Scissors Throwdown website points out a few specific rules that competitors will need to abide by during the tournament.

First, each game will be initiated by each player saying in unison, “Rock, paper, scissors, shoot” while simultaneously “pounding the throwing hand into the palm of the non-throwing hand.” If the two players are not synchronized, the referee will help establish synchronization.

Whichever shape a player throws during the game, of course being rock, paper, or scissors, must be easily identifiable.

Two matches will be held simultaneously on the American Dream Stage starting with best three out of five contests. The finals will be best four out of seven.

Tournament referees will be present to “ensure that the competition is held fairly and equally.” They will be allowed to make rulings such as “redoes.” Any rulings made by the referee are not subject to questions or disputes, according to the official website.
