No injuries, dog missing after large Cumberland Township home destroyed by fire

No injuries were reported after a large Adams County home was destroyed by fire on Friday, according to a release by fire officials.

Firefighters had been called to the report of a house fire on the 1900 block of Biglerville Road in Cumberland Township, north of Gettysburg, at 11:37 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, according to a release by the Gettysburg Fire Department.

While en route, a chief officer for the department reported that a large column of smoke was visible in the area, and requested the working fire dispatch, the release said.

When firefighters arrived, they found a well-advanced fire that had spread throughout a large single-family dwelling, the department said. All occupants had evacuated and were accounted for prior to the fire department’s arrival, according to the department.

Two garages attached to the home were not involved in fire, according to the release, with one containing a large motorhome. Firefighters made an aggressive effort to defend the uninvolved garages, saving the garages from fire damage.

No hydrants were present in the area, according to the release, which required rural water supply operations. Tanker trucks shuttled water to the scene from a residential development on Misty Ridge.

Crews operated on the scene for several hours to ensure the fire was extinguished, the release said.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal, the release said.

Several animals escaped the fire and were on the loose, including three dogs, according to a post by the Adams County SPCA. Two of the dogs had been found and returned to their owners by Saturday morning.

As of the most recent update, posted on Saturday, the Adams County SPCA said one dog remained on the loose, named Minnie, a 12-year-old dog who was said to be wearing a sweater.

A second-alarm fire had previously destroyed the same residence on Aug. 19, 2011, according to news reports from the time.

During the 2011 fire, at least nine cats and dogs were estimated to have perished as fire tore through the previous 3,000-square-foot home on the property, according to the Aug. 21, 2011 edition of the Evening Sun.
