North Texas Area United Way gives out free goodie bags

North Texas Area United Way held a free Christmas goodie bag giveaway drive-thru on Saturday, bringing Christmas cheer to children.

Cars were lined up along Armory Road from 10:30 am until noon as North Texas Area United Way employees and volunteers visited each car.

“Every year we do a Christmas goodie bag giveaway — usually the first Saturday in December,” Carol Marlar, executive director, said. “It’s just a chance for us to give back to the community and see the children.”

Retired Wichita County Judge Woody Gossum dressed up as Santa Claus and passed out candy canes to kids in every car.

Each kid received a goodie bag filled with the “Nightmare before Christmas” book, materials on good resources for families, hot cocoa, snacks, bubbles and activity books.

Marlar also said all of this was made possible by a grant from a private foundation.

Four hundred goodie bags were prepared for the drive-thru event, as well as several backup toys and hot cocoa. That way no one left empty handed.
