Officers arrest, book and release Idaho man accused of firing 41 times near I-90

Dec. 10—Idaho State Police arrested a man suspected of firing 41 rounds from a rifle toward Interstate 90 late Monday near State Line.

The episode forced the temporary closure of the busy highway. No one was injured.

The ISP also disclosed that Wyatt Armstrong, 23, could also face charges of disturbing the peace and driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Armstrong was released from jail following his booking.

Just before 8 p.m., witnesses reported that a man near a parked pickup in the median near the Washington border was shooting toward I-90 as cars drove by, according to an ISP news release. Other witnesses reported they saw a truck on the side of the highway with the door open and a man standing next to it, pointing a semiautomatic rifle at traffic, court documents say. Officers were able to shut down the freeway and handcuff him safely.

When police questioned Armstrong, he told them he was traveling to Rosalia to end his life, but his truck broke down on the side of the interstate, court documents say. He was “extremely distraught and emotional,” a police officer wrote in their report.

Police declined to answer why he was released from jail following his arrest.
