Ogdensburg looks to fill Planning & Development vacancies

Dec. 11—OGDENSBURG — Applications are being accepted for two open positions in the city’s Office of Planning and Development, one of them being its director.

The City of Ogdensburg is looking to fill the position of director, vacated Dec. 1 with the resignation of Andrea L. Smith, who left the position after 11 years.

For the director’s position, salary will be between $85,000 to $110,000 including “excellent fringe benefit package including New York state retirement and platinum-level health insurance significantly covered by the City,” according to the city’s posting.

The city is looking for someone who has graduated from a “regionally accredited or registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in city planning, public administration, or business administration and two years of full-time paid experience in city planning, economic and community development or industrial development”; a master’s degree in city planning, public administration or business administration and one year of full-time paid relevant experience; or a combination of education and full-time paid experience.

The second position is for a planner to work alongside the director, a new position that was put into the 2025 budget.

“This is an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in shaping the future of our community. As a planner, you will be responsible for driving initiatives that help the City of Ogdensburg grow sustainably, attract investment, and enhance the quality of life for residents. Planners collaborate with stakeholders to develop land use plans, guide community development projects, and implement policies that align with the City’s vision for growth and revitalization,” the job posting stated.

Depending on qualifications and experience, candidates could be considered for Planner 1, Planner 2 or Planner III. Salary ranges from $50,851 for a beginning Planner 1 up to $85,738 for an experienced Planner III.

The planner position is a provisional appointment and the successful candidate will need to take a Civil Service exam and score within the top three to be permanently appointed.

Civil Service applications for both positions can be obtained on the city’s website at www.ogdensburg.org or at City Hall at the City’s Clerk’s Office. Completed applications must be returned to City Clerk Cathy Jock.

“Applications will be accepted continually and reviewed weekly until the position is filled,” according to the posting and is the same for both positions.
