Ohio prison guard died of blunt force injuries to head, autopsy report states

An Ohio prison guard who was killed by an inmate on Christmas Day was beaten to death, according to an autopsy report.

An autopsy by the Franklin County Coroner’s Office released Tuesday reported that 62-year-old Andrew Lansing died of blunt force head injuries. He also suffered several contusions and lacerations around his face and mouth, and his brain hemorrhaged from the assault, according to the autopsy.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction identified 27-year-old inmate Rashawn Cannon as the suspect in Lansing’s killing. Cannon was serving a minimum eight-year sentence for felonious assault and illegally carrying a firearm. He was transferred to the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility after Lansing was killed.

Lansing’s death prompted calls for change from the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association, a union representing correction officers in the state.

“We’re going to insist and demand on accountability,” union leader Chris Mabe told The Dispatch on the day of the killing. “We’re demanding action from the governor’s office.” The union also wrote to the governor’s office, demanding that the state prisons director and the Ross Correctional Institution warden be suspended during the investigation into Lansing’s death.
